“I’ve been laid off (or I think I’m next). What do I do?”

In my email signature at work, my title starts with “human being.” Perhaps this is why I receive questions about being a HUMAN at work (in addition to questions about AI visibility and integrated marketing).

Among all the “human” questions I’ve received of late, there is one that seems to be a near-constant. Arguably, it’s the penultimate question from humans in corporate America in 2026: I have been laid off or I think I’m about to be laid off. What do I do?

Clearly, this is an enormous question. It deserves more than one episode, so this is going to be a two-parter (and hopefully my cold will have cleared by the next one).

In part one, we cover some brass tacks; next episode, we'll get into the much deeper aspects of self-identity in the face of employment changes.

If you're in a dark place and you're figuring out your employment situation, if you aren't employed, or if you’re employed and slogging it out, let me just offer you something that we’ll cover in both episodes. That is the fact we are human beings, not human doings.

Your worth is so much bigger and more important than your paycheck. If circumstances around your paycheck have changed or about to change, take a listen.

Does anyone else remember the phrase “spray and pray” in PR? (And does anyone else still get grossed out by it?!) Same.
